One of the difficulties in ministering to indigenous people is the drastic difference that exists between their lifestyle and the lifestyle of those in Guatemala City. For example, we have found it very difficult to attract adults to the Sunday morning service. This is the time when most of the town goes to the market; consequently, our Sunday evening service in Sumpango is better attended by adults than the morning service. Last Sunday night I was greeting people as they began to arrive. Suddenly, I noticed two new faces approaching me, and was pleased when this grandmother and young mom entered the doors of the church. Their two children have been attending for a few months, but we had been unsuccessful in getting the mom and grandmother to attend one of our services. As I began preaching on the importance of the church in the lives of our families, I noticed the attentiveness of the grandmother, Dona Mar. During the invitation, she was one of two people who raised their hands indicating their desire for salvation. She arose from her seat, and one of the ladies in our church was able to lead her to Christ. We were thrilled to see her make this life-changing decision, and are looking forward to discipling her.
