Don't Rob an Eye Doctor One of my students at Tiwi is an older man who worked at an eye clinic for years. Last week, three policemen in a truck came to the campus wanting to talk to Aman. He didn’t offer an explanation for what they wanted, and I didn’t want to be nosy, even though the urge was strong. This week, he asked for permission to miss classes Thursday, because he has to appear in court. This was too much, so I asked if he was in trouble or if everything was under control.
Aman began telling about an incident some time ago in which he was robbed by thugs somewhere in the Tiwi bush. The main culprit is a Digo, and since Tiwi is a Digo area, he has to take a taxi from the main road to the school in fear of retaliation. The police caught the man, but Aman is afraid of friends and family members wanting revenge. Aman says that while the man was robbing him, he looked him in the eye. That’s when he noticed a trauma cataract (that's a scar on his eye, to you and me) in his left eye. He said the whole time he was being robbed he studied this man’s eye.
When he made the police report, he couldn’t tell much of what the guy looked like, but he explained in detail about his eyes. Believe it or not, that’s how they caught the guy. Now, Aman has to go to court to give his testimony. I guess the moral of this story is if you have an eye problem, don’t rob an eye doctor!
