I Can Relate To Paul
I Can Relate To Paul

After nearly 21 years as a missionary wife in Papua New Guinea, I am beginning to relate to what Paul wrote about in 2 Corinthians 11:26.  We were on our way to Namatanai, New Ireland for a New Year’s service with the Namatanai Baptist Mission.  Our six-year-old granddaughter, Alisa, had begged to go with us.  She was as happy as a lark and just as chirpy, to be in the boat and on our way.

I was watching the waves and feeling like Peter.  I suggested to my husband that we ask the boat operator to turn back.  The “captain” said it would be better on the other side of the Pidgin Islands.  It was a bit better, but a two-hour boat ride took us four and a half hours.  We finally arrived as the sun set.  Then we sat in a dark sea-side village and waited for a truck, which they promised was coming.  It finally came, but the driver was drinking (Not tea!)  We packed into the back of the truck for lack of any alternative.  We labored over “not easy roads”, had a flat tire, and an angel of mercy (sober) rescued our battered bodies and took us the rest of the way to Namatanai town.  We had been in perils of waters and in perils by a drunken heathen but God delivered us.  We did a lot of praying and thanked God for the flat tire.  When we finally arrived, we found that the Christians had just organized someone to go looking for us.  We rejoiced together in God’s Care.
