Last month, I returned to Ethiopia for the first time in four years. The goal of this trip was to answer questions that will help prepare the way for our final arrival some time next year. As expected, I found that many things had changed from the last time our family was there.
Since much was accomplished on this trip, there are several blessings I want to mention. First, I was able to price housing in the capital city. I went through four houses and took pictures and video for Amanda back home. Now we have a better idea of housing prices and what to expect as we look at renting a home. Second, I toured several different schools for our children. This was just another answer to prayer knowing that our children will have a good education as we live in Ethiopia. Third, I visited several hospitals. As in any third world country, finding a private doctor and a place for medical emergencies does cross your mind. I went to one particular hospital that deals with many foreigners in Ethiopia and also met the pediatrician that will be caring for our children. Lastly, I spent some of the trip looking for the availability of furniture, appliances, food items, and of course, writing down many of the prices. All of this information is valuable as we continue to make plans.
Of course, the productivity of this trip could not have happened without the help of so many. The current BBFI missionaries in Ethiopia are nothing short of a blessing. For a new family arriving on the field, not only am I thankful for their help, but also the encouragement. Alongside them was one particular Ethiopian, Dawit Hailu, who made all the difference in the world in helping answer questions. He is a true servant in helping spread the Gospel. I also can’t forget to thank my home pastor, Richard Edwards, for taking the time to come. Having a pastor that is so involved is a blessing. Plus, he loves Ethiopian food!
